Reuters reports "Nokia Corp (NOKIA.HE) said on Wednesday it had filed a number of lawsuits against Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) for violating 32 technology patents, striking back at the iPhone maker's legal action targeting the one-time cellphone industry leader a day earlier.
Nokia's lawsuits, filed in courts in Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich, Germany, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, cover patents for displays, user interfaces, software, antennas, chipsets and video coding."

Microsoft Acquisition of Nokia - It is Better to License Than Sell the Patents
Today, the big tech news was Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's handset business for $5B. Unlike Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Nokia did not sell its patents. Instead, Nokia granted Microsoft a 10-year license for $1.6B. In Reuters, Dan Levine explains why that makes sense in Why Nokia didn't sell its patents to Microsoft.

Nokia and RIM Settle All Patent Disputes
Nokia and RIM enter into new patent license agreement.
Not much detail in the press release, but sounds like Nokia owner of 10,000 patent families is the winner. "The financial structure of the agreement includes a one-time payment and on-going payments, all from RIM to Nokia."
I expect more patent settlements of a global nature in 2013. Companies have gotten over the hurdle of thinking they can use other companies patents without a license and are well aware of the expense of patent litigation.

Tonight, CNET has an interesting article Google blasts Microsoft, Nokia for hiding behind patent trolls that discusses Google's submission of reports to the FTC and European Commission that claim Microsoft and Nokia are acting anticompetitively by using patent trolls to wage litigation against companies that might otherwise adopt the Android operating system. The reports are private to Google and the agencies.
